Overview
The Diabetes Update section on Thursday focuses on new ideas and therapies relevant to patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Advances in Endocrinology and Metabolism on Friday and Saturday will provide the clinician with updated, pragmatic information about the management of common endocrinologic and metabolic problems, as well as insight into important current areas in clinical research. Objectives
As a result of the education, I intend to:

  1. DIABETES UPDATE At the completion of this program, course participants will be able to: • Evaluate and appropriately use GLP-1 receptor agonist therapies and SGLT2 inhibitors, incorporating current evidence regarding indications, benefits, long-term clinical outcomes, patient selection, and the prevention and management of adverse effects.
  2. Apply GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy in complex and special patient populations, including patients with type 1 diabetes, solid-organ transplants, cardiovascular disease, end-stage kidney disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome, when clinically appropriate.
  3. Evaluate advances in automated insulin delivery systems and identify appropriate candidates for insulin pump and automated insulin delivery therapy.
  4. Recognize medications associated with drug-induced diabetes and hyperglycemia and develop appropriate strategies for monitoring and glycemic management.
  5. Screen patients at risk for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and incorporate current approaches to evaluation and treatment into clinical practice.
  6. Identify and address emotional and behavioral barriers associated with the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes to support patient engagement, self-management, and achievement of individualized treatment goals.
  7. Apply evidence-based approaches to inpatient diabetes management, including the assessment and treatment of hyperglycemia in hospitalized patients.
  8. Apply current evidence to the evaluation and management of osteoporosis, including appropriate selection and sequencing of antiresorptive and anabolic therapies.
  9. Recognize common causes of low bone density and fragility fractures in women of reproductive age and develop appropriate diagnostic and management strategies.
  10. Evaluate patients with hypoparathyroidism and apply current and emerging treatment approaches, including consideration of genetic etiologies when appropriate.
  11. Determine the appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic use of radioactive iodine in benign thyroid disorders and thyroid cancer, including the role of diagnostic and post therapy scans, dosimetry and selective use of I-124 imaging.
  12. Apply evidence-based approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism and distinguish established clinical evidence from common misconceptions regarding biochemical evaluation and thyroid hormone replacement.
  13. Identify patients with thyroid disorders who may benefit from interventional procedures and appropriately incorporate image-guided and other interventional approaches into multidisciplinary thyroid care.
  14. Apply clinical reasoning to the evaluation and management of challenging thyroid cases, integrating laboratory findings, imaging, pathology, and patient-specific considerations.
  15. Evaluate adrenal incidentalomas for mild autonomous cortisol secretion and determine appropriate management and follow-up.
  16. Evaluate pituitary adenomas and select appropriate medical treatment and monitoring strategies based on tumor type and clinical presentation.
  17. Apply current lipid guidelines to cardiovascular risk assessment, screening, treatment targets, and management of patients with lipid disorders.
  18. Evaluate the role of newer lipid-lowering therapies and select appropriate agents based on clinical indications, treatment goals, efficacy, safety, and patient-specific factors.
