Overview
Presented by the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), this course reviews clinically relevant topics in infectious diseases that are commonly seen in the inpatient and outpatient settings. It includes updates on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases with real-time information on key concepts needed to manage them.

Objectives
As a result of the education, I intend to:

  1. Apply knowledge and principles to diagnose, treat, prevent, and manage common infectious diseases encountered in inpatient and outpatient clinical practice including skin and soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, bone and joint infections, endocarditis, staphylococcal infections, nosocomial infections, sexually transmitted infections, and infections of the central nervous system.
  2. Incorporate into practice the diagnosis, management, treatment, and prevention of respiratory viral infections including influenza, RSV, COVID-19, and others.
  3. Incorporate into practice the use of vaccines in adults and adolescents to prevent infectious diseases, and incorporate methods for discussing these therapeutics with diverse patient groups.
  4. Identify and manage less common infections such as infections in immunocompromised patients, mycobacterial infections, and infections associated with travel related exposures.
  5. Identify, diagnose, treat, manage and prevent key emerging/novel infections, and assess available sources of data and information to maintain an up-to-date knowledge base on this dynamic landscape.
  6. Incorporate into practice the optimal use of antimicrobial agents including an understanding of their efficacy and appropriate usage for prevention and treatment of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections.
  7. Apply basic principles of antimicrobial stewardship to everyday clinical practice in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
