Overview

The MATE (Medication Access and Training Expansion) Act requires new or renewing DEA licensees (prescribers of schedule II – V controlled substances) to complete 8 hours of training on the treatment and management of patients with substance use disorders. The deadline to do so is the licensee’s upcoming DEA registration date. This 8 hour online course recorded from the 4th Annual UCSF Addiction CME Conference aims to increase the core competency of medical teams in the inpatient and outpatient settings to improve care for patients who use drugs. This course will increase skills in diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of common substance use disorders through didactics and discussions taught by local addiction experts.


Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:


  1. Apply new knowledge to better recognize substance use (SU) disorders;
  2. Revise screening practices to align with evidence-based recommendations for SU;
  3. Apply evidence-based treatments of SU disorders;
  4. Apply strategies to improve clinical team collaboration and practice;
  5. Apply communication strategies for more effective team care of patients with SU.

ACCME Credit: UCSF Office of CME designates this live Activity for a maximum of 8.0 AMA PRA Category 1™ Credit(s)TM.

Advance Practice Registered Nurses and Registered Nurses: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME.

California Psychologists: The California Board of Psychology recognizes and accepts for continuing education credit courses that are provided by entities approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM is acceptable to meeting the CE requirements for the California Board of Psychology. Providers in other states should check with their state boards for acceptance of CME credit.

AAPA Credit: UCSF Office of CME has been authorized by the American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria.
This activity is designated for 8.0 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. PAs should only claim credit
commensurate with the extent of their participation.  Approval is valid until June 30, 2026. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

ACPE Credit: This activity for pharmacists has been approved for 8.0 continuing pharmacy education credits under the UAN JA0000302-0000-23-003-H01-P. Credits will be reported to CPEMonitor(R) within 45 days of claim date. 

MATE Credit: This CME/CE opportunity meets the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act requirements from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) training on substance use disorders.

Providers planning to receive or renew their DEA registration can earn 8.0 credit(s) towards their one-time eight-hour MATE requirement by completing the entire activity."

Pain Management Credit: The approved credits shown above include 8.0 credit(s) toward meeting the requirement under California Assembly Bill 487, Pain Management.

Pharmacotherapeutic Credit: For the purposes of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME.  Nurses should claim 0.1 CEUs for each contact hour of participation in designated pharmacotherapeutic continuing education.

The approved credits shown above include 8.0 contact hours of Pharmacotherapeutic content towards meeting the requirement for nursing pharmacology continuing education.
