Overview

Brought to you in collaboration with Purdue University College of Pharmacy, the UCSF Smoking Cessation Leadership Center, and the UCSF Office of CME, Rx for Change: Clinician-Assisted Tobacco Cessation is a comprehensive tobacco cessation training program that equips health professional students and practicing clinicians, of all disciplines, with evidence-based knowledge and skills for assisting patients with quitting.

The curriculum is designed to address seven topic areas:

  1. Introduction and the Epidemiology of Tobacco Use

  2. Pharmacology of Nicotine and Drug Interactions with Tobacco Smoke

  3. Forms of Tobacco and Alternative Nicotine Delivery Systems

  4. Behavioral Counseling for Tobacco Cessation

  5. Medications for Tobacco Cessation

  6. Patient Encounters

  7. Responsible Conduct of Research (Not CE-accredited)

Each module provides one or more videos, with a duration up to 45 minutes per module, and accompanying slides. Modules also provide downloadable counseling resources and handouts for patient encounters.

Participants must view the recorded materials, answer the multiple-choice test questions after each module, and complete the evaluation to claim credit and receive a certificate. Note that post-tests require a passing score of 75%, and participants have an unlimited number of attempts to successfully complete each post-test.

Open the FACULTY tab above for instructor and financial disclosure information.

Objectives
As a result of the education, I intend to:

  1. List five health risks associated with chronic tobacco use.
  2. Describe alternative nicotine delivery systems (ANDS) and understand health risks associated with these products.
  3. Review pharmacodynamics of nicotine in the body and its role in addiction.
  4. Recognize drug interactions with tobacco smoke.
  5. Understand the 5 A’s for promoting tobacco cessation among patients: Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, and Arrange.
  6. Compare various tobacco cessation medications, including the safety and efficacy data, for the management of cessation.
  7. Develop a treatment regimen that incorporates the most effective medications for tobacco cessation, including drugs, doses, routes, and frequency of administration.
  8. Counsel a tobacco user on the proper use of the all first-line pharmacologic agents (including dosing, instructions on use, potential side effects, and precautions).
  9. Describe the services provided by the tobacco quitline (1-800-QUIT NOW).
