Bay Area - Think Like a Shrink: Cal-MAP Pediatric Mental Health Bootcamp for PCPs

This activity aims to improve the capacity of primary care providers (PCPs) to address common pediatric mental health concerns, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, autism, disruptive behaviors, suicidality, and substance use disorders. Participants will learn how to use evidence-based screening tools, provide psychoeducation, recommend appropriate psychotherapies, and prescribe evidence-based medications as appropriate. This training has 3 modules: 1) Anxiety/Depression/ADHD: The Basics; 2) Disruptive Behavior, Complex ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder; and 3) Adolescent Risk Taking: Eating Disorders, Substance Use, Suicidal Ideation.

Registering for this bootcamp will also register users for the California Child and Adolescent Mental Health Access Portal (Cal-MAP).

1. Recognize and diagnose the most common mental health conditions in children and adolescents, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, autism, suicidality, and substance use, using validated screening tools.
2. Analyze potential causes of disruptive behavior, including neurodevelopmental conditions and trauma exposure, and apply basic behavior management principles to help reduce distress and improve functioning.
3. Manage the most common pediatric mental health conditions, recommending appropriate psychosocial and/or pharmacologic treatment as indicated, and collaborating with subspecialty, emergency, and other types of care when needed.
4. Start, monitor, and safely use commonly-indicated psychotropic medications in children/youth, including stimulant medications, non-stimulant ADHD medications, and SSRI's.
5. Apply therapeutic communication skills and trauma-informed care principles to promote relational health and engage patients and families with behavioral/mental health concerns.

Physician Assistants: The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) states that the AMA PRA Category 1 Credit^TM are acceptable for continuing medical education requirements for recertification.

California Pharmacists: The California Board of Pharmacy accepts as continuing professional education those courses that meet the standard of relevance to pharmacy practice and have been approved for AMA PRA category 1 Credit^TM. If you are a pharmacist in another state, you should check with your state board for approval of this credit.

California Psychologists: The California Board of Psychology recognizes and accepts for continuing education credit courses that are provided by entities approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). AMA PRA Category 1 Credit^TM is acceptable to meeting the CE requirements for the California Board of Psychology. Providers in other states should check with their state boards for acceptance of CME credit.

IPCE Credit: UCSF Office of CME designates this Live Activity for a maximum of 8.00 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) Credit(s).
