Confronting and Subverting White Supremacy Culture in Healthcare, Supervision, and Mentorship

Session 6 with Dr. Colleen Cullinan (1 CE)

How can we imagine, create, and foster a new future for behavioral healthcare that is fully committed to eradicating inequality and oppression? This session will guide participants in the application of abolitionist strategies to dismantle oppressive systems and redefine culture within behavioral science.

We will begin with a review of the deep roots of white supremacist culture in healthcare and continue to identify ways we can confront the toxic ideas that perpetuate racism. The session will include an historical overview of white supremacist culture and racist ideas in healthcare, experiential exercises exploring and confronting whiteness, and anti-racist action step planning. A historical overview and exploration of white supremacist culture and toxic racist ideas will equip participants with a context to begin the process of confronting whiteness in personal and professional settings. Grounded in the cultural humility model, participants will then begin to explore how whiteness is baked into structures and practices related to supervision and mentorship. Finally, participants will come together to create specific action steps towards recognizing and interrupting patterns of white privilege and oppression based on racial/ethnic identity, review a variety of interventions that disrupt cultural status quos, and plan and apply structures to uphold social justice within their professional and personal environments.

Presenter Bio:

Dr. Colleen Cullinan is a licensed clinical psychologist with pediatric specialty and an Associate Professor within the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (CAPBS) at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). In her current role at UCSF’s Benioff Children’s Hospital, Dr. Cullinan builds on her passion for supporting integrated behavioral health care programs in pediatric medical and other community-based settings. Across the years, Dr. Cullinan has mentored, supervised, and trained many aspiring psychologists and medical professionals. She is a co-founder and co-chair of the DREAM IPC Conference, a national biennial conference that focuses on pediatric integrated care. Dr. Cullinan has been a leader in cultural humility education and training and is co-creator of an experiential cultural humility curriculum that has been utilized by various medical, mental health, and educational professionals. Dr. Cullinan currently serves as on the board of the Society for Pediatric Psychology (SPP) as the conference program chair. She is the honored recipient of several awards including the 2021-22 Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) Biennial Award for Excellence in Diversity Training.

1. Describe components of White Supremacy culture, their related behaviors in the healthcare system, and the way that they can impact supervision/mentorship dynamics.
2. Identify personal biases and professional systems that perpetuate exclusion and inequity.
3. Identify actionable steps that you will take to dismantle oppressive structures and supervision practices in home institutions.
