Overview

Session 4 with Dr. Emily McTate (1CE)

Navigating rupture and repair in clinical supervision is critical to maintaining the supervision alliance. Moreover, it is a necessary part of culturally responsive supervision. However, many supervisors have not had sufficient training or guidance in navigating these processes and/or the use of relational strategies in the context of cross-racial and/or cross-cultural supervision dyads. This session will describe challenges mentors and supervisors may encounter in their relationships with learners in the context of cultural and sociocultural factors. The presenters will discuss strategies grounded in liberation psychology that address these challenges. The presenters will outline the importance of mentor/supervisor humility in the context of the rupture repair process and will outline practices that promote healing and wholeness.

Presenter Bio:

Dr. Emily McTate is a pediatric psychologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, USA, where she is joint appointed in the departments of Psychiatry & Psychology and Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine. She currently serves as director of psychosocial services for pediatric hematology and oncology. She has had the honor of caring for children, adolescents, young adults, and their families managing sickle cell, oncologic conditions, and other blood disorders for over 10 years. Dr. McTate trained at Saint Louis University, the University of Louisville Medical School, and also at the Mayo Clinic. Her research and clinical interests include communication between patients and providers (Shared decision making), health equity, and diversity, equity, and inclusion within academic medicine. She has been awarded grants to support training of psychologists in anti-racist efforts and has published in the area of anti-racism in medicine.


Objectives

As a result of the education, I am able to:


  1. Identify behaviors to demonstrate humility
  2. Discuss rupture repair from a lens of liberation psychology
  3. Identify strategies for reparative intervention
