Overview

Session 2 with Dr. Marilyn Sampilo (1 CE)

Clinical supervision is critical for trainees/emerging professionals to develop culturally responsive models of care. However, the vast majority of supervisors have not received formal training in clinical supervision, even fewer in culturally responsive supervision, and the vast majority of supervisors, have not grappled with the influence of broader sociopolitical factors on our professional practice. As a result, experts have called for expanding on APA’s Multicultural Guidelines: An Ecological Approach to Context, Identity, and Intersectionality, 2017 and integrating additional theories and frameworks that address the lasting impacts of colonialism and other oppressive forces on the profession and training, including clinical supervision (DeAngelis, 2023). The presentation aims to review existing theories and frameworks that enhance understanding of culturally responsive supervision, including decolonial and liberation psychology, and to outline necessary strategies and steps that supervisors should undertake to move towards a more culturally responsive supervision orientation and practice in the context of social justice.

Presenter Bio:

Dr. Marilyn Sampilo is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in integrated behavioral health and health equity. She received her doctoral degree (PhD) in clinical child psychology, with specialization in pediatric psychology, and a Master of Public Health (MPH), with specialization in social and behavioral aspects of public health, from the University of Kansas. Dr. Sampilo currently works as the Director of Behavioral Health for the All Hands Health Network. All Hands is designed as a socially and clinically integrated network consisting of various community partners working together to improve the health and well-being of children and families living in communities in Chicago that have been systematically underserved and under resourced. Dr. Sampilo is particularly passionate about addressing structural and systemic drivers of behavioral health inequity in partnership with communities. Nationally, she provides consultation, training and professional development in the areas of health equity, public health and healthcare advocacy, and affirming, culturally responsive health care, with over 100 invited presentations and trainings in these areas. She is also a well-respected trainer on culturally responsive clinical supervision with both invited addresses and trainings to several entities. She was recently appointed lead and master trainer by a SAMHSA center for training and technical assistance for a culturally responsive supervision curriculum to be disseminated nationally. She also serves on several national committees and work groups focused on promoting culturally and linguistically appropriate health service delivery. Dr. Sampilo has received several local and national awards for her work in service to communities that have been systematically marginalized including the 2024 APA Committee on Children, Youth, and Families Early-career Award for Outstanding Contributions to Benefit Children, Youth, and Families; the 2023 Su Casa Hispanic Center Latino Leadership Award; the 2022 Roger Harrison Inclusion, Diversity, and Excellence in Advocacy and Social Justice (IDEAS) Award; and the 2022 SPP Award for Distinguished Contributions to Diversity in Pediatric Psychology.

Objectives

As a result of the education, I am able to:

  1. Explain the importance of understanding the influence of colonialism and western epistemologies in professional psychology
  2. Summarize relevant frameworks for anti-oppressive supervision practice
  3. Identify action steps and strategies that supervisors can begin integrating into their practice that are consistent with anti-oppressive and culturally responsive practice
