Session 1 with Dr. Dana Crawford (1.5 CE)

This 90-minute presentation is designed to enhance cultural competency in behavioral healthcare through the application of the Crawford Bias Reduction Theory & Training (CBRT) and the utilization of Racial Awareness Conversations for Everyone (R.A.C.E.) Cards. Developed by Dr. Dana E. Crawford, CBRT integrates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy (IPT) to address bias as a pervasive and socially transmitted condition that impacts mental health. The presentation will explore the theoretical foundations of CBRT, introduce the R.A.C.E. Cards as a practical tool for facilitating conversations about race and bias, and provide real-world examples of their application in healthcare settings.

Dr. Dana E. Crawford is a licensed clinical psychologist and leading expert in trauma-informed care, bias reduction, and cultural healing. She runs a private practice in Manhattan and is the author of Healing Bias: Your Guide to Individual, Interpersonal, and Institutional Change. Dr. Crawford is also the creator of the R.A.C.E. Cards discussion deck and the Crawford Bias Reduction Theory & Training framework.

1. Integrate CBRT principles with clinical practices in behavioral healthcare to address and reduce bias in patient care and supervision.
2. Effectively use R.A.C.E. Cards in various professional settings to facilitate conversations about race, racism, and bias.
3. Identify common barriers to discussing race and racism in professional settings and develop strategies to overcome these barriers effectively.
4. Engage in self-reflection to identify and understand personal biases and their impact on professional practice.
5. Discuss the ethical implications of addressing racial bias and promoting cultural competency in behavioral healthcare.
