Overview

This meeting is dedicated to improving diagnosis in health care. DEX26 will:

  • Commence with presentations reviewing the trajectory of efforts to promote diagnostic excellence and a state-of-the-science review and discussion.

  • Present and discuss research advances and ongoing studies through both open discussions and presentations of oral abstracts and posters.

  • Include sessions focused on measurement and assessment of progress in improving diagnosis.

  • Include designated sessions to present advances in clinical reasoning, how to teach these skills, and how to optimize clinical reasoning in practice, designed with medical educators in mind.

  • Highlight considerations of how AI, ‘the new kid on the block’ can be used to promote diagnostic excellence in research, education, and practice.

Objectives
As a result of the education, I intend to:

  1. Describe the current state of diagnostic safety in healthcare and the progress that has been made over the past decade
  2. Understand the most common cognitive biases and communication breakdowns that lead to diagnostic error and describe ways to avoid these in clinical reasoning and patient care
  3. Find and use recently developed tools, surveys, and evaluation instruments that can be used to measure diagnostic performance and outcomes
  4. Describe how to assess and use available AI tools to assist in diagnostic practice
