Overview

The overall purpose is to introduce and/or reinforce the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for generalists to care for adult patients with psychiatric and substance use disorders. We will accomplish this goal through the continued publication of the PsychSnaps newsletter, an innovative longitudinal education program developed for primary care clinicians by UCSF physicians Drs. Zoë Kopp, Era Kryzhanovskaya, and Emma Samelson-Jones.

About PsychSnaps

Launched in December 2022, PsychSnaps now has >700 subscribers, including >200 UCSF clinicians. The PsychSnaps team’s expertise spans general internal medicine, addiction medicine, adult psychiatry, and medical education. Every other week, we release an email newsletter to participants that features a brief, clinically focused, case-based lesson on mental health and addiction medicine topics, with the aim of expanding the capacity of generalists to address the mental health needs of primary care patients.

Specifically, we aim to help clinicians:

  1. Talk with patients about their experience with challenging thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and behaviors in patient-centered ways, including the patient’s experience with substance use, suicidal and self-harm thoughts and behaviors, delusions, and hallucinations.

  2. Broaden the differential diagnosis for patients with psychiatric symptoms and take initial steps in management, even when there is diagnostic uncertainty.

  3. Feel confident prescribing 1st and 2nd line medications for substance use disorders, major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and PTSD, and the first line medications for psychosis, bipolar disorder (mania and depression), agitation from dementia or intellectual disability, and panic disorder.

  4. Incorporate select techniques from psychotherapy into the primary care visit.

Instructions to Access the Newsletters and Claim CE Credit

Enrollment in the PsychSnaps program provides access to bundles of newsletters between December 2022 to January 2026 for a one-time fee of $55.00.  You will also have access to new content as it is added throughout 2025.

Each bundle consists of 12 articles which will take 2-4 hours to read.  You may engage with the articles in any order. Once you have read all the articles in a bundle and completed its associated evaluation survey, you will be awarded three (3) continuing education credits.

Once you complete the evaluation survey and claim credit for a bundle, the content will still be available to you; however, you will not be able to earn additional credit for that set of articles.

Click the REGISTER tab above to begin. You will be asked to sign in or create an account to continue the registration process. Once signed in and registered, access the CONTENT and TESTS tab to review each available bundle. You can claim credit upon completion of the group of newsletters and obtain a certificate.

Materials will be available November 2025 through mid-October 2028.
