Overview

The overall purpose is to introduce and/or reinforce the knowledge, skills and attitudes involved in the care of older adult patients and those with serious illness. We will accomplish this through GeriPal podcasts, the premier podcast for dissemination of ideas and discussion of issues related to geriatrics and palliative care.

Hosted by UCSF professors, Alex Smith and Eric Widera, GeriPal podcast bring together with some of the brightest minds in geriatrics, hospice, and palliative care in order to:

  1. highlight and break down key clinical and policy implications of new medical and interdisciplinary research,

  2. go deep when it comes to issues common among older adults, like dementia, cancer, heart disease, and multimorbidity,

  3. offer new perspectives and pearls that will help listeners see common frustrations with fresh eyes,

  4. offer ways for every health care professional to contribute to better clinical outcomes and quality of life for older patients and those with serious illness – and to create a health care system that’s more humane for professionals, patients, and caregivers.

GeriPal podcasts run about 50 minutes in length, similar to a ground rounds, and can be found on all the leading podcasting apps and on YouTube. The podcasts have on average 10,000 downloads per episode, and we run about 40 podcasts per year.

We are aiming for about half of our podcasts in each year to have CME credit attached to them, each one designated for a maximum of 0.75 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM, so that would be about 20 credits per year if all goes well for the $100 fee.  View a list of CME eligible podcasts here.

Objectives

As a result of the education, I have skills and strategies to:

  1. Critique key clinical and policy implications of new medical and interdisciplinary research in geriatrics and palliative care
  2. Apply in practice new knowledge of the unique health care needs of older adults and those living with serious illness
  3. Incorporate new knowledge into care delivery for patients with geriatric syndrome, like dementia
  4. Improved management of physical, social, and psychological issues in those approaching the end of life
  5. Apply prognosis to preventative interventions like cancer screening to improve both the under and over-utilization of these interventions
  6. Refine approach to care in order to reduce inappropriately prescribed medication
  7. Increase and improve on serious illness and goals of care discussions with patients
  8. Describe ways that every health care professional can contribute to better clinical outcomes and quality of life for older patients and those with serious illness
  9. Create a health care system that’s more humane for professionals, patients, and caregivers
